Manage Your Time Effectively in High School

Time management is an essential skill for high school students, as well as for university, and later on, for the workforce. Take advantage of these tips and learn who to manage your time efficiently so as to keep on schedule and prepare for the future.

Managing your time efficiently is essential for students across all levels of education, as it will help them study efficiently and avoid procrastination.

How often do you find yourself thinking “I have the whole week ahead of me. I can do all of my assignments” and once the weekend comes you find out you haven’t done half of it? Now, you can see yourself doing everything during the weekend. This situation can certainly be a stressful one, as it may make us feel like we failed ourselves, that we won’t be able to study everything before the next test, finish writing an essay before the deadline, or that we won’t be able to enjoy the weekend! Setting up unrealistic schedules will only make us feel disappointed and frustrated.

On the other hand, procrastinating and thinking we will be able to finish on time is also unrealistic and will make us not even feel frustrated, but also fail a test.

Finding a balance between these two states and managing our time in an efficient and realistic way is the most important skill high school students should develop, and will also come in handy when they go on to college.

4 Tips to Help High School Students Manage Their Time

1. Do short to-do lists for each day

Students can visualize more easily what they have to do with a to-do list and it enables them to avoid forgetting anything.

They should make sure they keep them short! If they are too long, it can be counterproductive. Doing a list with 2 to 4 things, depending on the length of each one of them, is the best way to set up realistic expectations that you are able to meet.

2. Set a timer

There are many things that can be a distraction when we have to study. Watching an episode of a series, scrolling through social media, talking to friends, among other things might be much more interesting than studying, but this way you won’t get anything done.

For that reason, setting a timer for at least an hour in which you cannot touch your phone and you have to study will help you concentrate. After the timer finishes, you can take a short break to do whatever you want to do and, then, set another timer.

3. Get rid of all the possible distractions

As previously stated, there are many things that can distract us even if we set timers. Our phones are proven to be the biggest source of distraction for students. Turning it off or at least silencing it will be really helpful, as you won’t get distracted every time you get a notification.

4. Find out at what time you are most productive

It is impossible to maintain a high level of concentration and productivity the whole day, and it isn’t healthy either. For that reason, students should find the time of day they are most productive and schedule their study sessions and their days according to this.

The transition from secondary school to university is a difficult one for most students, as the coursework and study materials are much more extensive and many students find it hard to get used to it. For that reason, developing time management skills during your time in high school will not only help you through high school, but also when you go on to university.
