Effective Time Management Strategies for High Schoolers

High school students juggle many responsibilities all at the same time! Here are some tips for how to effectively manage time in high school.



Start by using some sort of daily to-do list.

In these to-do lists, remember to place the most important tasks at the top! Thinking about these important tasks may make you feel anxious but, in fact, naming them will give you a sense of control and also serve as a reminder of what it is you need to accomplish. 

Your to-do lists should not only include your homework and study responsibilities but the extracurriculars and hobbies that you have planned for that day. Remind yourself to take care of you! Keeping these extracurriculars and hobbies on your task list will help you stay motivated and help you maintain a more balanced day.

Find a way to keep some work with you.

If you know that you will be spending idle time waiting for a doctor’s appointment visit or on a train or bus trying to get somewhere else, you can use that time to catch up on reading!

Using the little windows of time—where you would otherwise be scrolling through your phone endlessly—for reading can help you get ahead in the right direction. 

Don’t worry about saying no every now and then.

High schoolers enjoy a lot more independence and mobility than middle schoolers. After all, high school students are budding young adults. It is usually during high school that students begin to socialize more and more, which means a lot of fun but also increased temptations for distractions.

If a friend invites you to do something, but you have an important assignment or deadline due that you need to work on, then don’t be afraid to say no! Your true friends will always be there for you and should be able to understand that there are times when you need to focus on your studies. 

If anything, you can arrange for a time that works best for everyone involved.

Figure out when you are most productive.

During high school, you will be spending a lot more time studying than ever before in order to succeed. Now is a good time to figure out when you are most productive. Do you get more work done early in the morning? Are you a night owl that doesn’t mind staying up into the late-night hours? Figuring these details out will help you plan your schedule better so that you can both sleep well and accomplish all your academic goals.

Set aside dedicated blocks of study time throughout the school week and weekend.

Take a look at your weekly schedule. Find specific windows of time that you can dedicate to working on assignments and studying for specific classes. When you are engaging in these blocks of study time, do your best to stay focused and turn off any and all distractions such as your cell phone.

Once you understand how long it takes you to do certain activities, learn how to schedule time for relaxation and rest.
Scheduling free time for relaxation and rest will allow you to recharge so that you have full energy when you go back to studying or taking classes.

Never forget to take breaks and reward yourself for the hours of hard work that you accomplish.

Sleep!

Your brain needs at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night in order to fully rest and recharge. Sleeping a sufficient number of hours every night will help you feel better physically and emotionally as well as benefit your academic performance.
