Boston Latin School

The Boston Latin School is a public exam school in Boston, Massachusetts. Boston Latin School was established on April 23, 1635, making it both the oldest public school in America and the oldest existing school in the United States. The Boston Latin School was a bastion for educating the sons of the Boston "Brahmin" elite, resulting in the school claiming many prominent New Englanders as alumni.

Admission is determined by a combination of a student's score on the Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) and recent grades, and is limited to residents of the city of Boston.[41] Although Boston Latin runs from the 7th through the 12th grade, it admits students only into the 7th and 9th grades.

Boston Latin School is a six-year college preparatory school which provides a rigorous academic program in the classical tradition and which fosters the pursuit of excellence. Latin School serves an economically and culturally diverse population of students in grades 7 to 12. It is also an institution that provides the groundwork for full participation in our economy and society, preparing students to be both productive citizens in a democracy and responsible adults who have an awareness of global issues.

Recognizing the importance of the development of the whole person—the intellect, the body, and the spirit– Boston Latin School combines the contemporary with the traditional . The study of languages, literature, art, music, history, as well as ancient and modern cultures, provides exposure to the ideas and values that have shaped civilizations throughout the world. The study of mathematics, science, and computer and information sciences provides the basis for both an understanding of the natural world and a competency in modern technology. Physical and health education help maintain a sound mind and body. Taken together, these required studies are intended to inspire a love for learning and provide the skills needed to pursue further knowledge in college and throughout life.

The maintenance of standards of behavior and performance is essential to the current life as well as to the future reputation of the school. Changes, ever necessary, indeed inevitable, must be introduced and evaluated with care and attention to ensure that they contribute to instructing "youth so far as they may be fitted for the Universitie."
